Nov 12, Colombo: Another ship carrying a stock of 22,000 metric tons of urea fertilizer purchased under the World Bank loan is scheduled to arrive at the port of Colombo Monday (14).
The World Bank has approved a $105 million loan to purchase urea fertilizer for paddy and maize cultivation in the 2022/23 Maha season.
The shipment of 22,000 MT of urea fertilizer scheduled to arrive on Monday as the second batch of urea fertilizer received by the country under the World Bank loan.
Through the loan, a shipment of 13,000MT of fertilizer arrived previously. With the second shipments Sri Lanka has received 35,000 MT of urea purchased with the World Bank loan.
The first consignment arrived from China while the second shipment will arrive from Malaysia.
The Ministry of Agriculture said 120,000MT of urea fertilizer have been procured for this season.
At present, urea fertilizer required for cultivation is being provided to farmers through 566 Agrarian Service Centers in the island.
Except Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts, all the other districts have been provided with the necessary stock of fertilizers for the first urea application which is applied 14 days after paddy cultivation or planting.
For the three districts in the East, the urea fertilizer required for all three applications have been provided at one time.
Officials in charge of Agrarian Service Centers say that the warehouses of those centers are full of urea fertilizer required for cultivation.
