Yara Ghana Donates Free Fertilizers to Two Farmers Group

Yara Ghana has donated six hundred bags of fertilizer to two vulnerable women&;s group in the Northern part of Ghana as part of the &;Grow Ghana&; initiative.

Presenting the items to the beneficiaries at the Aliu Mahama sports stadium during the Agrichouse foundation Pre-harvest conference and exhibition event, the West Africa regional director of YARA, Mr. Danquah Addo-Yobo told reporters that the gesture is aimed to help the farmers produce about hundred hecres for their own benefit.

"We significantly support the pre-harvest event over the years, this is the 12th edition, this year&;s the growth has help us to run a project call &;Grow Ghana&;, we have made a commitment of twenty million dollars to provide fertilizers for farmers for free, and then we&;re targeting to give out about 3,600 bags of fertilizers, we want to reach about 100,000 farmers to help cereal production in Ghana".

According to him the price of fertilizers is very high and the availability has also been difficult, hence the &;Grow Ghana&; initiative will help address the challenges.

"Today what we have done here is that, we have been working with women groups around the country, so we have two of them which are the St. Cecelia Cooperation and the Northern widows Association, each group will take 300 bags of the fertilizer that will help them at list produce 100 hecres, we have seen the hand working they&;re doing, so we&;re taking the &;Grow Ghana&; initiative to extend a bigger support to them, so that is what we have here in Tamale today."

He advised the leadership of the two groups to distribute the fertilizers evenly to their respective members, adding that Yara Ghana will continue to support less privilege and serious groups.

"In fact, the "Grow Ghana" project will continue till the end of the year including the first quarter next year as well, so it will still spread for some time, we&;ll continue to look at the opportunities in the market and how we can support farmers and come with different solutions as we go along".
